The Process

Busted Tusk relics are made exclusively from natural materials, using hand tools throughout the carving process. The work is often carried into remote wilderness environments, where pieces are carved in isolation and without the machinery of a conventional workshop.

Working this way keeps the process deliberately direct: the material, the tools, and the hands of the maker are the only things shaping the form.

2025 Protoforms

These pieces were carved during the 2025 woodcrafting expedition I undertook along the beautiful Northern California coastline. This is a small selection of finished pieces that were crafted specifically to explore the characteristics of New Zealand kauri and figured redwood burl driftwood collected from the coast between Bolinas, CA and Fort Bragg, CA. I use the term "protoform" to designate pieces carved without proper documentation of the process. All pieces carved are considered protoforms if they do not include an accompanying video documentation of the carving process.
